Potsdam – RB Leipzig did their cup sandwich between the two games against Paris Saint-Germain without much effort.
At the fourth division club SV Babelsberg 03, last year’s finalist prevailed 1-0 (1-0) in the second round of the DFB Cup and, as expected, booked the round of 16 ticket. «We had everything under control. We could have had more peace with the second or third goal. That was an issue for us, ”said RB coach Jesse Marsch. “We are through. We are happy about the experience, the fight and the victory, ”added the American.
Dominik Szoboszlai (45th minute) scored the goal for the Bundesliga club in front of 6,218 spectators in the sold out Karl Liebknecht Stadium. Babelsberg did not create another cup coup after the penalty crime thriller in the first round against SpVgg Greuther Fürth. “Ultimately, Leipzig deserves victory, I’ll be honest. We played well at times, at eye level. That cannot be overestimated, ”said Babelsberg’s trainer Jörg Buder.
A narrow stadium, the fans almost within reach on the pitch and in the air the smell of bratwurst and beer. Leipzig first had to adapt to the contrast program to the Champions League between the glamorous PSG duels. Marsch found the culture shock “cool”. His team, which had changed to five positions compared to the 4-1 victory in the Bundesliga against Greuther Fürth, took some time.
Buder had given his fourth division clubs to simply play the way they always do. The hosts played much more defensively than in everyday regional league play. Leipzig patiently looked for the gap. Benjamin Henrichs (9th) shoveled the ball over the goal. Yussuf Poulsen (10th) shot too central. And Hugo Novoa Ramos (29th) failed on the outstanding 03 goalkeeper Jannick Theißen, who this time did not have to give Marco Flügel, the first-round penalty hero, the place.
A zero number at halftime would have been a nuisance for RB in view of the superiority, but Szoboszlai let Henrichs and Poulsen unlock the chance to take the lead shortly before the break. Babelsberg now had to be bolder – and RB got more rooms. Poulsen (47th) and Szoboszlai (49th) could not use their good chances with space in the penalty area. Andre Silva (62.) drove the ball well over the goal, the recently substituted Christopher Nkunku missed a huge header chance (75.).
Again and again, RB attacks were blocked at the last moment. Babelsberg lacked courage and consistency for a lucky punch that would at least have made extra time possible. Robin Müller (71.) came closest to the moment of happiness with his shot at the outside netting.
