RB Leipzig has taken the lead in the Bundesliga for at least one night. The team of coach Julian Nagelsmann won 1-0 (0-0) at VfB Stuttgart, displacing Bayern from first place. The defending champion from Munich can add more on Sunday. Dani Olmo scored the winning goal for Leipzig in the 67th minute. Emil Forsberg failed in the 23rd minute with a dubious penalty kick against VfB goalkeeper Gregor Kobel. Stuttgart are still without a win at home this Bundesliga season and slipped to eleventh place.
Meanwhile, Bayer Leverkusen suffered the next setback in the title fight despite a dream goal from Nadiem Amiri. The team of coach Peter Bosz lost 1: 2 (1: 1) at Eintracht Frankfurt, suffered the second defeat of the season and missed the at least temporary return to the top of the table. Two weeks after the bitter last-minute bankruptcy against record champions Bayern Munich (1: 2), Leverkusen’s heel hit by national player Amiri (10th) was not enough. Eintracht, on the other hand, made the connection to the European Cup ranks thanks to Amin Younes (22nd) and an own goal by Edmond Tapsoba (54th).
Union Berlin on the Champions League course
Union Berlin remains one of the big surprises in the Bundesliga in the new year. The Köpenicker won at Werder Bremen 2-0 (2-0) and thus settled in the upper third of the table. At least until the end of Sunday’s game of the 14th matchday, the Unioner ranked fourth in the Champions League. Against a very weak Bremen team, Sheraldo Becker (12th minute) and Taiwo Awoniyi (28th) scored the goals for the guests, for whom it was the third away win this season. Werder, however, could not take the momentum after the two victories shortly before Christmas and acted like a relegation candidate.

Borussia Mönchengladbach celebrated a very important victory thanks to Breel Embolo. After a number of unused big chances, the striker scored in the well-deserved 1-0 (0-0) at Arminia Bielefeld (58th minute) for coach Marco Rose’s team, which had previously been without a win four times in a row. With the victory, which should have been much higher, the Champions League round of 16 moved closer to the European Cup positions again. Bielefeld, which has been waiting for a Bundesliga win against Borussia since 2003, remains third from bottom and was once again clearly inferior in a duel with the team from the Lower Rhine.
Freiburg overruns Hoffenheim
SC Freiburg was able to continue its winning streak at the beginning of the new year. Coach Christian Streich’s team won 3-1 (3-0) in the Baden duel at TSG Hoffenheim and thus scored their fourth three-point in a row. The SC has only achieved such a successful streak once in 2001. The French Baptiste Santamaria with his first Bundesliga goal (7th) and the former Hoffenheim Vincenzo Grifo with a hand penalty (34th) scored for Freiburg, who have been unbeaten in six games. In addition, TSG defender Kasim Adams underwent an own goal (42nd). Ihlas Bebou scored the right goal for Hoffenheim (58th).

1. FC Köln could not win their first home game in 2021 and have been waiting for a Bundesliga success in their own stadium for 13 games and almost a year. Against fear opponents FC Augsburg, Cologne lost in a very tough game with 0: 1 (0: 0). The Brazilian Iago scored the winning goal (77th minute) for the guests with his first goal of the season.
Schalke also loses in their big debut
Schalke 04 came one step closer to the inglorious Tasmania record in the unsuccessful debut of coach Christian Gross. The bottom of the table, threatened by relegation, lost 3-0 (0-1) at Hertha BSC and has now been without a win for 30 league games. In the upcoming home game against TSG Hoffenheim, Schalke could set Tasmania Berlin’s negative record from the 1965/66 season. Matteo Guendouzi (36th), Jhon Cordoba (52nd) and Krzysztof Piatek (80th) scored the goals for the Herthaners, who gained some air in the relegation battle with the victory. Schalke was again unlucky in the first game under Gross, and there was also a lack of courage and commitment in the second half.
