RB Leipzig surprisingly separated from sports director Max Eberl on Friday. In the run-up to the top game against FC Bayern Chairman of the Supervisory Board Oliver Mintzlaff explained the reasons for the decision.
In the official press release, RB had already made no secret of the fact that Eberl’s “lack of commitment” was the decisive factor for the separation. In recent weeks and months, the 50-year-old has not been able to clearly deny the rumors about a move to FC Bayern. Apparently Eberl will now also move to FC Bayern.
Oliver Mintzlaff explained before the big game Heaventhat the relationship between RB and Eberl was “unsalvageable”. “That’s why we acted so consistently and decided to say together: Things can’t go on like this, there’s a lack of commitment – for the club, for the city – and therefore also the conviction to continue on the long-term path here.” Mintzlaff said.
The RB boss continued: “This is certainly a process that started a little earlier, in April or May, when the rumors arose. Of course, one would have liked to have been more convinced that we would be here after a few years in Gladbach.” “We will have to go a long, long way together. Especially because we saw that Max and his team did a great job. Of course that makes it all the sadder.”
“It was a difficult decision. I fought for Max for a long time and the conviction was very strong. This common misjudgment is disappointing,” he said, summing up the misunderstanding with Eberl.
In addition to Eberl, his confidant, RB sports coordinator Felix Krüger, also had to resign. The sporting management is now in the hands of sports director Rouven Schröder. “I’m glad he’s here. Rouven has our trust and is well received in the team,” said Mintzlaff about this personnel.
