Jonathan David scored his 20th league goal for LOSC Lille 2022/23 in Sunday’s 2-1 win over Montpellier to level again with Kylian Mbappé at the top of the scoring charts. Since the start of the season, the 23-year-old attacker has increased his market value by 15 million to 60 million euros. Interested clubs, RB Leipzig was repeatedly rumored, would have to make the Canadian the most expensive North American in football history if they wanted to sign him in the summer. According to the Italian, Lille have set the price tag for David at €65m. Since January 2019, Christian Pulisic has held the previous record of all CONCACAF professionals – i.e. players with nationality from North and Central America as well as the Caribbean countries. The 24-year-old then switched from Borussia Dortmund to Chelsea for €64 million. In a domestic Canadian comparison, David is already ahead: Lille paid 27 million euros to KAA Gent in 2020 and thus 13 million more than FC Bayern including bonuses for Alphonso Davies (22).

Is the price tag too big for Leipzig? The Saxons’ record signing is still Naby Keïta, who cost 29.75 million euros – David’s fee would be more than twice as high. Lille has the cards in his hand, the two-footed attacker is contractually bound until 2025.
