BARCELONA (AP) — Rayo Vallecano striker Randy Nteka scored and assisted in a 2-0 win over Almeria on Friday at the start of the Spanish league season.
Rayo took control of the league in the season opener thanks to two early penalties in the debut of manager Francisco Rodríguez, who replaced the successful Andoni Iraola after he left to manage Premier League side Bournemouth.
Midfielder Isi Palazón, Rayo’s leading scorer the previous season, converted a penalty in the 20th minute after defender Edgar González fouled Nteka in the area.
Nteka, who spent the second half of last year on loan with Elche, fired into the back of the goal eight minutes from set pieces after Sergio Akieme blocked a cross from Nteka in the box with his arm.
Last season, Rayo fought to finish in the European places, but finished 11th. This summer he reinforced the squad with the arrival of central defender Aridane Hernández from Osasuna and Uruguayan defender Alfonso Espino from Cádiz.
Later, Sevilla receives Valencia.
Real Madrid kick off the season on Saturday against Athletic Bilbao and Barcelona visit Getafe on Sunday.
