Raul Castro has confirmed his resignation as leader of the Cuban Communist Party

Raul Castro said he was resigning as first secretary of the Cuban Communist Party. This marks the end of the era in which he and his brother Fidel Castro led Cuba since the 1959 revolution, the Associated Press reported.

Raul Castro announced the decision in a speech at the CCP’s Eighth Congress today. He did not say who he would support as his deputy leader, but it is believed that it will be Miguel Diaz-Canel, who took over the presidency in 2018.

We recall that on August 1, 2006, after undergoing major abdominal surgery, Fidel Castro temporarily handed over to his brother – Army General Raul Castro Rus, the posts of Chairman of the State Council and Chairman of the Council of Ministers First Secretary of the Cuban Communist Party and Commander-in-Chief of the Revolutionary Armed Forces.

Raul Castro was behind the reform of the country’s socialist economy. Castro and former US President Barack Obama have begun a process of historic reconciliation between communist Cuba and the United States. However, he was questioned by Trump.
