The Uttar Pradesh state judge acknowledged that this was not the first time the small rodents had ingested large quantities of drugs. Previously, a large portion of a 386-pound drug catch had been affected by the creatures.
The judge also indicated that it seems difficult for police to protect seized drugs from animals.
Sell to labs
The best way to prevent it in the future, the judge said, is to stop stockpiling drugs in police stations and selling them to labs. The money that this generates then goes to the state, it is his idea.
The police couldn’t keep the rats off the drugs because the animals are too small, the judge thought.
That rats don’t just eat our food scraps has already become clear in India. In 2018, ATM repairmen in the Assam region said the machine had broken down because the creatures had likely chopped up and eaten Rs 1.2 million worth of paper money.
There has been a reported case in Argentina where officers were fired for claiming that rats were responsible for the disappearance of large quantities of cannabis. It is uncertain whether rats in India are really to blame this time. This is still under investigation.
