Rats and mice in the Netherlands increasingly survive poison

The study, commissioned by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, examined more than 2000 rodents, most of which were brown rats and house mice.

Of the latter group, 38 percent turned out to be resistant to poison, while 17 percent of the brown rats studied were less sensitive to toxic pesticides.

Different per region

These figures are national averages. The researchers see differences at a regional level. In some regions only resistant rats were found, in other regions none at all. The same applies to mice studied.

The consequence of the resistance is that the rodents are less easy to control.

State Secretary for Infrastructure and Water Management Vivianne Heijnen sent the report to the House this week and emphasizes the importance of monitoring, prevention and control without chemical agents.

As of January 2023, the rules will be tightened, and only certified companies may use chemical agents to control rats and mice.
