ratiopharm Ulm pulled off the big surprise in the quarter finals of the Basketball Bundesliga and knocked out Alba Berlin. In the fourth game of the best-of-five series, Ulm won 83:81 (50:51) and are in the semi-finals.
From the start, a fast-paced duel developed between ratiopharm Ulm and Alba Berlin. The guests from the capital got off to a better start and were now 12:6 ahead. However, Ulm found their game better and better and led after the first quarter with 26:22.
And the hosts continued to do the same in the second quarter. With a strong ratio beyond the 3-point line, ratiopharm extended the lead to 38:31. Alba held on and continued to score thanks to many offensive rebounds.
Towards the end of the first half, Ulm’s offensive weakened, while Alba continued to improve. The albatrosses turned the game around with two threes in a row, at the break it was 50:51 – all open between the seventh of the main round and the second.

ratiopharm Ulm just ahead against Alba after the third quarter
The start of the second half was a mirror image of the first. Alba started strong again and extended the lead to 58:52. Ulm’s coach Anton Gavel reacted and quickly called a time-out to stop the opponent’s rhythm – with success. Ulm took the lead again with a 7-0 run after a three by Philipp Herkenhoff.
It continued with high-speed basketball and frequently changing leadership. After the third quarter, Ulm was a razor thin lead (68:67). In the final quarter, Ulm made too many misses, but Alba also showed nerves and was unable to break away decisively.
With three minutes to go, Berlin were leading by three points, but Ulm’s Thomas Klepeisz countered with his first converted three to equalize. Twenty seconds before the end, Ulm used two free throws to take the lead 82:79.
High tension in the final phase between Ulm and Alba
The last few seconds were just a matter of nerves. Berlin’s Maodo Lo failed moments before the end of the game with a three-point attempt. In the end it was 83:81 for Ulm, the rest was endless cheering in the sold-out arena. “Of course we are extremely happy today,” said Ulm’s coach Anton Gavel at Magenta Sport. “We still have a few games ahead of us.”
Yago dos Santos was the most successful for Ulm with 16 points, for Berlin Jaleen Smith (16) and Malte Delow (15) scored in double figures. In the semi-finals, ratiopharm meets FC Bayern Munich.
