Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart | Recension

Our favorite-Lombax and his plate-Niklas to companion is back. A lot of action with giant weapons is promised.

The first game in the Ratchet & Clank series was released in 2002 for Playstation 2. Since then, the game series has remained true to various Playstation consoles. Now it’s time for Rift Apart, which will only be released for Playstation 5.

The game continues in the same spirit as previous games in the series, which means a futuristic and action-packed world where Lombaxen (a cat-like creature) Ratchet is given the task of saving the universe from the doom of Dr. Nefarious, and especially his counterpart in another dimension, Emperor Nefarious is on way to create.

In Rift Apart, Dr. Nefarious has created cracks between different dimensions in the universe. The different dimensions have given the developers the opportunity to create alternatives to famous characters. It’s fun to suddenly come across someone you recognize from previous games but in a different role.

In one dimension there is a female Lombax named Rivet. She becomes a new playable character. It’s really uplifting to get an alternative to Ratchet but why is there no difference between these characters? They even share the arsenal.

Well, there is a difference between playing as Rivet and Ratchet respectively. Both have a sidekick and Ratchet also has a six-legged antivirus robot, Glitch, which he sends into computers and which cleans them of viruses. It is a whirling, but whirling in a positive way, experience where you climb around the computer, one moment on the floor and the other on the ceiling.

The rake has Clank as a sidekick. He can open some of the half-open cracks that exist between different dimensions. These are puzzles that are really fun to solve.

Anyone who plays Rift Apart should not expect any revolutionary news. Although there are news such as the puzzles I just mentioned, most of them are the same. You are in a futuristic world filled with colorful characters and with nuts as currency. The ratchet has a wrench as its main weapon. It’s actually quite useful, but why can not you upgrade it as you can with firearms? A few more melee weapons had not been damaged.

However, there is no shortage of tough firearms. It’s a mix of new and old weapons. They are gigantic and clearly tough to use. As you play, newer and more powerful weapons are unlocked. In addition, you can upgrade all the weapons in many steps to make them even tougher.

All weapons in Rift Apart are meant to be hot. There is no place here on the sly. If you see a bully, just hit the wrench on the head or waste some ammunition in your favorite weapon. But my tip is to, if possible, save a little on the ammunition because it has a tendency to run out.

The plot felt quite tentative at first. I did not really know where it was going. As I played, however, the plot became more gripping and well-told. Just like in previous games, there is a lot of humor embedded in the dialogues.

The plot is linear with few exceptions. On every planet you visit there are main missions. Sometimes you return to the same planet later in the game and then you get more main missions, in addition to some volunteer missions. However, I had seen that there were slightly more such assignments. However, they extend the game’s durability somewhat, just like the ability to maximize weapons and look for gold bolts.

Rift Apart uses the PS5’s resources in a very good way. The game is incredibly nice and can be played at 60 FPS. The PS5’s fast SSD means that charging times are almost non-existent.

The hand control also impresses it and is very precise. The PS5 has a clearly updated hand control, including an adaptive resistor in the R2 and L2 buttons. It is used in such a way that you press R2 halfway to aim. If you push it in completely, you shoot. Very practical. The control speakers are used extensively and in a very good way. This also applies to the shake function.

I can only recommend Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart to anyone who likes action games. It is a fun and well-made game where the shooter finger is rarely allowed to rest. The weaknesses are not many and easy to overlook.

The good

  • Action at your fingertips
  • Nice
  • The weapons
  • Utilizes the PS5’s muscles and hand control very well
  • Svenska

The bad

  • A little tentative introduction
  • No melee weapons update
  • More volunteer assignments had not hurt
