Shortly
The record-breaking yield of the 18-year-old, who will compete on Sunday with RASTA’s easyCredit Basketball Bundesliga team against Veolia Towers Hamburg (5 p.m., live on free TV on WELT TV and on Dyn), was an important factor. Likewise the immense increase in performance of head coach Hendrik Gruhn’s team in the second half. In the first one they were already behind by 20:29 (16th), but in the first four minutes of the third quarter they turned the game around to 46:40 (24th) thanks to a 15:1 run and also recovered still from a six-point deficit (71:77) in the 36th minute. In the 4th quarter, the home team hit six three-pointers and knocked the Titans from the Elbe to the ground.

Voices about the game
Hendrik Gruhn (Head Coach Vechta II): “First of all, I’m happy that we won the game. We lacked energy in the first half. We planned to play with a lot of show and intensity – especially on defense. Because we didn’t do that well at all in Dresden. At the beginning of the third quarter we had these good four minutes. We play with energy, with speed and get open throws, we get into fast break situations and then use them. It all came from us getting stops on defense and shifting up a few gears. I think what was crucial in the end was that the boys showed the grit that you need to win a game like that against a good Dresden team. You have to say about Johann Grünloh’s 20 rebounds: brutal. The dominance this boy has in the zone is always remarkable – and what it gives to our game too. Big compliment also to Karl Bühner. He gave us a real boost in the second half and hit important shots. The boy is developing great and it’s a lot of fun working with him and seeing his development. But there were still a lot of things today that we need to work on in the coming week. As coaches, we can convey many things to the players. But there is also a certain level of personal responsibility on the part of every player to ensure that they go into a ProA game like this with a certain level of willingness. We expect that from every player, but it wasn’t given to us today by one or two of them. We’ll have to talk about this next week. And I hope that things will be better in Bochum on Friday.”
Fabian Strauß (Head Coach Dresden): “First of all, congratulations to Hendrik and the boys from Vechta! In the end, our pointless turnovers made the difference and on defense we didn’t get the two or three stops we needed. We didn’t box out well and clearly lost the rebound duel again. And then in the end this defeat is the product of too many mistakes piling up. And then unfortunately you also lose against Vechta II, who, in my opinion, are getting stronger from week to week. And, I told Hendrik before the game, it’s fun to watch the boys play.”
1st quarter
While RASTA’s farm team competed without Jack Kayil, who was at the ADIDAS Next Generation Tournament in Podgorica (Montenegro), the Dresden Titans had to do without three regular players, including Grayson Murphy, one of the best ProA professionals. What was notable in the first ten minutes was not the playful elements, but the high error rate on both sides. Five ball losses each for Vechtaer and Dresdener, 13 missed throws in RASTA II, even 15 for the Titans – there’s a different way. So there was plenty of windfalls to be picked up, which Johann Grünloh did and already had eight rebounds to his name by the first break (14:13).
2nd quarter
While Vechta’s shooting rate in the 2nd quarter still left a lot to be desired, the Saxons now repeatedly found shots in the zone and, after a 10:14 deficit (10th) in the 1st quarter, gained a 27:18 lead ( 15.). The Vechta talents were in danger of losing out because of their own performance, which had previously been presented with little energy and creativity. But since the Dresden Titans also showed anything but their best game, the hosts were “only” behind by eight points at halftime – 31:39.
3rd quarter
Whatever Hendrik Gruhn said to his team during half-time, it worked. In the first four minutes of the third quarter. RASTA II hit six of its first eight shots, including threes from Kaya Bayram, Kevin Smit and Kaden Anderson. And when Luc van Slooten crowned the 15:1 run with his layup to make it 46:41 (24th), Dresden’s head coach Fabian Strauß decided to call a timeout. The Titans countered Vechta’s furious four minutes and regained the lead with a dunk from Lukas Zerner to make it 49:48 (28th) – RASTA II timeout. From then on the game remained close and extremely exciting. And Johann Grünloh had already grabbed 17 rebounds after 30 minutes.
4th quarter
An and-one three-pointer from Leon Okpara to make it 59:58 (31st) finally brought the Vechta fans into the game; team and audience now formed more and more of a unit. The RASTA II team’s fire that had ignited in the second half had spread. In the 34th minute, the Gruhn team fell behind 62:69, which resulted in another timeout. Great moments followed from 18-year-old Karl Bühner, who scored from beyond 6.75 meters in the 34th minute to make it 68:69 and then to make it 71:71 (35th). What had not hit either team from the outside in the first 30 minutes now fell through the net. Dresden’s two threeballs for a 77:71 lead (36th) were followed by Arne Wendler’s 79:73 with 3:34 minutes to go and the air became thin for RASTA II. But these were the last points for the Saxons, Vechta’s defense was standing! A very important three-ball from Smit (77:79, 39th) and strong nerves at the free throw line brought the necessary offensive output to defeat the Titans.
outlook
RASTA Vechta II continues on matchday 20 with an away game at VfL SparkassenStars Bochum. The Gruhn team will be there on Friday, February 2nd, at 7:30 p.m. (live & free at sportdeutschland.tv). After his return from the ADIDAS Next Generation Tournament, Jack Kayil will be part of the Vechta squad again. And because RASTA’s easyCredit BBL team only plays at home against MLP Academics Heidelberg on Sunday, February 4th, Johann Grünloh and Luc van Slooten could also be available to the farm team. The Bochum team have lost eight of their last nine matches and are bottom of the table in the BARMER 2nd Basketball Bundesliga ProA.
