Raspberry Pi Foundation releases Pi Zero 2 W with quadcore soc and 512MB ram – Computer – News

The problem with the RPI I always find that it’s just not every time. It’s a jack of all trades, but not really good at anything.

I use a Raspberry Pi 4 with 8 GB of memory as a build machine for various ARM(64) things. This way I don’t have to keep track of cross compiler chains. Everything can also be built in memory, even large images. This makes everything a lot smoother and prevents wear of the storage memory.

I also have some older Pi’s running for various small tasks. For example, I have a network napkin for a set of older HP printer and scanner that only have USB support. Also, I have several interactions with low-level equipment here and there (serial connections, etc.), which a Pi is particularly useful for.

For example, a Pi Zero can be used as a mouse emulator that moves the pointer a tiny bit at random times. Handy for home workers who are tired of their computer locking / turning itself off every so often.

I have also made an extension with a Pi for an old car, to add Bluetooth support to the original supplied radio (which cannot simply be replaced with an aftermarket unit). That also integrated with the car’s screen and with the buttons on the radio and steering wheel.

For many of these examples, there are other solutions. None are as cheap, widely available, and well-supported as the Pi. It’s that combination that keeps me coming back to the Pi for things like this.
