England lost the European Championship final to Italy after a decisive penalty shootout. Besides Rashford, his black teammates Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka also missed their penalty. That led to racist comments about the three English players on social media. The English Football Association FA, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Prince William have since condemned this racism.
Van Rashford, who plays for Manchester United, also defaced a mural in the Withington area of Manchester. Local residents later pasted hearts and other statements of support over the graffiti.
In his statement, Rashford wrote that the move moved him to tears. “The community that has always put its arms around me continues to sustain me. I’m Marcus Rashford, 23, a black man from Withington and Wythenshawe, South Manchester. If I’ve got nothing else, I’ll always have that .”
