Suara.com – A Belgian woman is known to have been infected with two variants of the corona virus at the same time before dying from COVID-19 in March, said a congress and local media, Sunday (11/7/2021).
The first documented case was discussed at the European Congress on Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ECCMID).
The findings indicate that there is a possibility that people can be infected by two varian COVID-19 simultaneously, said the congress holding the congress.
The association said the woman had been infected with the Alpha and Beta variants of the coronavirus, which were first discovered in the UK and South Africa. The team of doctors said the patient may have contracted it from two different people.

The woman, who is being treated at the hospital in Aalst near Brussels, has not been injected with a COVID-19 vaccine, said VRT, Belgium’s Dutch-language TV station.
Belgium, like other EU countries, has faced problems delivering vaccines since early 2021. Its vaccination program has been slow, although the EU has distributed vaccines for 70 percent of the population.
Citing discussions at the July 9-12 congress, the association said doctors believe the case is the first to be documented, and although rare, cases of such multiple infections can occur.
“Both variants spread (in March) in Belgium,” molecular biologist Anne Vankeerberghen of the OLV Hospital in Aalst was quoted as saying on the VRT website.
“So it is very possible that this woman was infected from two different people who carried two variants of the virus. Unfortunately, we do not know how the infection occurred,” he said.
