The legendary Winston Churchill, nicknamed the “old lion”, who made history as a hero of the Second World War and British Prime Minister, is also revealed in an artistic and literary light, with some of his personal possessions put on display. sale in New York since Thursday.
This collection, from the family of American media mogul Steve Forbes, is on display and available for purchase until January 28 at the Winter Fair for antique dealers and designers in the American economic and cultural metropolis.
Among the treasures on display is an imposing portrait of Churchill seated with his cigar in his hand, painted by Hungarian painter Arthur Pan in 1943, on sale for $125,000. “We acquired the best, documents, letters, the desk and paintings,” says enthusiastically New York dealer and collector of antiquarian books Pom Harrington, who is overseeing the sale.
Honorary citizen of the United States and the offspring of an American mother, Churchill (1874-1965) embodies both a “war hero and an outsider”, arousing immense admiration in America, believes Mr. Harrington, who anticipates a strong presence of American buyers. Among the notable pieces, the office of his London home at Hyde Park Gate, where Churchill wrote part of his memoirs of the Second World War, awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1953, is offered at $450,000. The hand-corrected proofs of these memoirs could find a buyer at $750,000, Mr. Harrington hopes.
Before taking center stage as an internationally renowned war leader and politician, Churchill was also an established painter. A 1935 painting titled “The Entrance to the Gorge at Todra,” created during a tourist trip to Morocco, is on sale for $395,000. Marrakech had particularly inspired Churchill, and his famous painting “The Tower of the Koutoubia Mosque” (1943) was sold in March 2021 by American actress Angelina Jolie via Christie’s in London for £7 million at the time. Finally, an edition of Churchill’s speeches on free trade, entitled “On Free Trade”, is also offered for sale for $150,000, arousing the satisfaction of Pom Harrington, a passionate collector of rare books.
