Rare mosquito-borne virus claims first Ottawa death. Ottawa Public Health confirms an Ottawa resident died from Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus in August.
This is the first case of this virus in the region.
It is a virus of concern because it can cause serious neurological disease and even death, according to Public Health. And there is no vaccine for this disease, which is transmitted to humans by mosquitoes.
The only way to prevent this disease is to protect yourself from mosquito bites.
