The rare Vb weather situation brings extreme snowfall and huge amounts of rain to Germany. Düsseldorf and the region are also affected.
Extreme snowfall and heavy rain are threatening Germany in the coming days. According to forecasts, a rare Vb weather situation will bring more than 300 liters of rain per square meter to parts of Central Europe, with the south and east of Germany particularly affected. The weather in Düsseldorf and North Rhine-Westphalia will also be affected by the extreme weather in the coming days.
The so-called Vb low will move over the Alps towards Germany by Friday at the latest. In Austria and the Czech Republic, meteorologists fear storm surges and snowfall at altitudes below 1,000 metres. In eastern Germany, the Elbe, Oder and Neisse rivers are particularly at risk. Due to the heavy rain, the situation there could become dramatic within a very short time.
The rare weather phenomenon is favored by greatly increased temperatures in the Mediterranean. The Vb low encounters cold polar air from the north, but usually it moves over the eastern part of Germany. A westerly drift is very unlikely, but could occur due to the inaccurate forecast. In North Rhine-Westphalia, there would then be a risk of heavy rain.
The extreme forecasts from meteorologists predict more than 125 liters of rain per square meter in Cologne and Düsseldorf, and almost 200 liters per square meter in the Ruhr area in just a few days. However, the weather models are currently still varying greatly, so an accurate forecast is difficult. A storm front is also moving in from the west along the North Sea coast.
According to the weather model of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), more than 30 litres of rain per square metre are expected in Düsseldorf, especially over the weekend. There may be isolated thunderstorms and heavy rain. However, the major impact of the Vb low will probably only be felt in NRW through its offshoots.
Nevertheless, there is a risk of a drop in temperature in Düsseldorf and the region in the coming days. During the night to Thursday, temperatures will already fall into the single digits, after which it will be almost frosty.
