Rare Two-Headed Snake Hatches in Exotic Pet Shop in Devon, England

On July 19, a small crab came out of its egg in an exotic pet shop in Devon, England. The scale-clad new world citizen is a western snub-nosed woodpecker, which is widespread in North America in the wild.

However, it quickly became clear to the staff at Exeter Exotic that this was a snake out of the ordinary. It had two heads.

– I was shocked. A bit disbelieving at first because they are rare, shop owner Alicia Johns tells BBC.

Fits well

Generally, snakes born with two heads have a shorter life span than other snakes, says Johns.

She emphasizes at the same time that the two-headed snake will not be available for sale.

– If we feel that it will get to a stage where he gets worse, is uncomfortable or has pain, then we will reassess the situation, she assures.

It has now been a little over three weeks since hatching. According to the pet store’s staff, the two-headed snook appears to be healthy.

– There doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with the body, apart from the tip of the tail which is curled. It also doesn’t seem to have any problems moving, they write in one Instagram-post.

Two heads, two eating habits

However, the staff is still not quite sure what it likes to eat. It seems that the two heads have different eating habits.

– The left head is interested in food. But we think its neck is a little narrower so that it struggles to eat, they say on Instagram.

As a result of the eating problems, the left head is served food in smaller portions than the right. The pet shop is hopeful that things will improve as the snake grows bigger.

– It is strange to see how the left head makes chewing movements while the right head eats.

Shakes the population: – Too bad

Popular hiss

Trynesnoker is a genus of snakes that got its name from the raised snout. The head shape enables it to dig in the sand.

The beaks are usually 60 to 80 centimeters long. At their longest, they can be 120 centimeters.

When they feel threatened, they inflate themselves, play out the neck skin like a cobra and hiss loudly. This makes them more vocal compared to other small snakes.

According to the Store norske lexikon, snooks are popular hobby animals. They are characterized as harmless as the venom is weak, although it has happened that snakebites have led to hospital visits.
