Sekor ular a special one on display at the Cameron Park Zoo in Texas. The reason is, he has two heads and is so, long-lived. This snake has two brains in one body.
“These snakes are very rare. They are getting rarer because of their longevity. Sometimes they have problems moving around and catching prey or avoiding predators, which makes life difficult for them in the wild,” said a spokesperson for Cameron Park Zoo.
The snake heads, called Pancho and Lefty, often give conflicting body commands, so their movements can be sporadic and uncoordinated.
“They seem to have different personalities as the right head is more dominant in eating and moving around. The left head will occasionally eat but it seems to mostly follow wherever the right head wants to go,” the spokesperson was quoted as saying. detikINET from Newsweek.
Sometimes this causes problems, such as neck injuries or snagging in obstacles such as trees and rocks. This snake was treated for a left neck injury. For safety reasons, the snake cage is free of any obstructions, only grass.
Two-headed animals are more common in reptiles than mammals, although they are still very rare. The condition, called polycephaly, can result from incomplete division of one embryo, or imperfect union of two separate embryos.
This particular snake was discovered by a family in Waco in their backyard in 2016. This rat snake is a fairly common species in the central and southeastern US. Pancho and Lefty are slightly smaller than a normal eight year old rat snake and their health is consistently monitored by zoo staff.
