Rare Triple Synchronized Aerial Ballet of Humpback Whales Caught on Camera off the Coast of Provincetown, Massachusetts

An incredibly rare image was caught on camera off the coast of Provincetown, Massachusetts, when three humpback whales jumped out of the water at the same time.

Robert Addie was on a birthday fishing trip with his three adult daughters, the first time they had all been together in years. They were off Race Point, hoping to maybe spot a whale.

“I’ve seen whales everywhere from the Cape to Hawaii to Alaska to Massachusetts, I’ve never seen a triple synchronized aerial ballet like that,” Addie said. “I was laughing moments before saying that every time I take out my phone they go away!”

A humpback whale was caught on camera pushing a boat off the coast of Plymouth, Massachusetts on Sunday. The authorities are alerting the community to an increase in this type of encounter.

But then, the triple sighting happened.

“And then bang, there he went and I was just gobsmacked,” Addie said. “Obviously I cursed. My oldest daughter, Sage, thought she was cool too.”

“They were in sync,” she continued. “They all turned in the same direction and then the youngest did the same movement. They have to come from quite deep at a very high speed to get their bodies out of the water like that.”

It was an awesome moment for Addie’s 59th birthday. She recently returned from a humanitarian aid trip to Ukraine. She said it was a sign and something she won’t forget.

“It was something very special,” Addie said. “For me, I’d like to think it was a representation of my joy at being home and having my three daughters with me this weekend.”
