Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – A rare treasure was reportedly discovered in Central Java. This was conveyed directly by the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment (Menko Marves) Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan.

“I just received a report yesterday that a very large source of lithium was found in Indonesia. But we are also confused that we have all this, the next government has a lot of homework,” said Luhut in the 2023 Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Work Program along with its Achievements and Evaluation Results, Friday (22/ 12/2023).

However, on this occasion, Luhut did not specify the location of the large lithium discovery.

These findings are a bright spot for the development of domestic electric batteries (Electric Vehicle/EV). Lithium is needed as a raw material for making batteries.

Indonesia’s battery development is hampered because it does not have lithium. Indonesia even has to work together with Australia to develop EV batteries. With these findings, Luhut said that Indonesia now has its own lithium.

“We want to look for it from Australia, now we have lithium and the source is very large,” he said.

Previously, the Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) had revealed the existence of lithium resources in Bledug Kuwu, Grobogan, Central Java. There is huge lithium potential there.

The Geological Agency is currently focusing on reviewing the discovery of new lithium sources in Grobogan. The lithium found comes from the brine system or mud and water.

“That (Bledug Kuwu area) has brine too, a brine system too, so we take samples of mud from the water. So when it is dried for about a few days the levels can increase 10 times. So this is interesting and the basin is quite wide. In the future we will study “further geochemistry, geophysics or hydrogeology,” explained the Mineral Coordinator of the Center for Mineral, Coal and Geothermal Resources, the Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Moehammad Awaluddin, when we met some time ago.

The potential of this discovery reaches 1,000 PPM Lithium. The hunting ground is also still wide because the basin is large.

Not only Lithium, the region also stores a mineral called Boron. Boron can be used for hydrogen fuel technology.
