Rare Super Blue Moon: First High Moon of 2023 Illuminates Night Sky – Upcoming Viewing Opportunities in September, October, & November

The first images of the first high moon of the year, this Monday, have already started to spread around the world.

This is one of the brightest moonlights of the year, with the Moon coming 22 thousand kilometers closer to Earth than usual. When the full moon coincides with the altitude at which the moon’s orbit is closest to our planet, an optical illusion makes the satellite appear larger and brighter to us. In the coming months you will have three more chances to see the supermoon: in September, October and November.

In the early hours of this Tuesday, the super-Moon is also “blue”, which does not mean that it will change color. “Blue Moon” is simply the name given to the second full moon in the same month.

Although the last “super-blue moon” happened a year ago, in August 2023, they are extremely rare. It is expected that it will not be seen again in Portugal in January 2037.
