Rare Celestial Event: Moon Occults Saturn Over Bulgaria
on the evening of January 4th, 2025, skywatchers in Bulgaria witnessed a rare astronomical spectacle: a lunar occultation of Saturn. This captivating event, where the Moon appears to pass in front of Saturn, blocking it from view, was visible to the naked eye in parts of the country.
According to astronomical experts,”during an occultation,an astronomical object is entirely or partially covered by an object that is closer to the observer.” This precise alignment of the Moon and Saturn provided a unique viewing opportunity for those in the right location.
The phenomenon, which began around 7:00 p.m. local time, was particularly well-observed in the city of Sliven. In Western Bulgaria, the Moon, approximately 25% illuminated, sat at a height of 19-20° above the southwestern horizon.
However, the visibility varied across the country. “From Southeastern Bulgaria, Saturn was not covered, but was observed in the immediate vicinity of the end of the lunar disk,” explaining the regional differences in the viewing experiance.
While this event was specific to Bulgaria, lunar occultations are relatively common astronomical occurrences. Similar events, involving different planets and stars, happen regularly across the globe, offering amateur astronomers and space enthusiasts opportunities to witness these fascinating celestial alignments. The January 4th event serves as a reminder of the wonders of the night sky and the ongoing celestial dance above us.
