In a strange scene in the middle of the ocean, an Australian celebrity documented a humpback whale that “stands on the head” in a movement that is considered rare, according to scientists.
Australian Brody Moss, who filmed the strange scene, said, “The whale’s tail suddenly penetrated (towards the sky) the surface of the waters in front of it,” according to what was reported by the “Sans Alert” newspaper.
Moss added: “The tail of a huge whale, it floats casually, completely motionless, and a small whale swims beside it.”
Whale Watching Western Australia also captured one of these special events, in 2019 and 2020. Moss did not say where he captured the sightings.
And when the mother whale exhibited this behaviour, her cubs would swim around her, just as Moss had watched.
One young whale off the coast of Brazil has been seen suckling while holding its tail up, while these whales can be cared for in other positions, so this behavior is not fully explained.
According to the scientific magazine “Sciencealert”, it is possible that the behavior is related to comfort, as the mother whale may turn upside down to rest so that she can monitor her child.
The researchers in the Brazil study noted that the whale’s tail is highly vascular and can be used to absorb or release heat from the body very effectively, they say.
