Rare Shark Attack Strikes Rockaway Beach, New York

The drama played out this Monday, August 7, 2023 off Rockaway Beach, New York. And for several weeks, many sharks, though not very present until then, have been seen in this area.

Fear over the city. If we know New York mainly its huge skyscrapers and its bubbling nightlife, we often forget that the city has many beaches, sometimes located a few minutes from Manaathan.

And it is on one of them, Rockaway Beach, that an extremely rare shark attack took place on Monday. Because as it relates the american press, a shark is indeed at the origin of the serious injuries to the leg of a swimmer, admitted in emergency to the Jamaica hospital. The animal has not since been located, despite an important research system.

If the police and firefighters did not initially assure that it was indeed a shark attack, they then confirmed the information and wanted to reassure the population: “Although this is an event scary, we want to remind New Yorkers that shark bites in Rockaway are extremely rare,” the local water management department explained.

Closed beaches

However, this incident occurred in a context where shark sightings have multiplied in recent weeks off Rockaway Beach. A finding that even forced New York City to temporarily close the beach for swimming several times last month.

Similarly, along Long Island, attacks have increased lately: three swimmers were bitten by sharks off Fire Island and the Hamptons on July 4 alone. These are all sightings of sand tiger sharks.

The Rockaway Beach attack is the first of its kind since 1953 in this area. That year, a 15-year-old boy caught a shark that bit him in the leg after being grabbed by the tail.
