The study’s chief archaeologist speaks of a “very exceptional find” in Britain. “Finding one head or part of the shoulders would be amazing, but to find three Roman heads is something special,” said researcher Rachel Wood. “It is a special experience to literally look into the eyes of people from the past.”
The busts have been transferred to a research center. There they are cleaned and further examined.
A thousand archaeologists
The construction of the new high-speed line between London and Birmingham has already yielded several historic finds. In total, a thousand archaeologists are working at more than sixty locations along the railway under construction. More than 50,000 skeletons have already been discovered near Euston Station in London. In Birmingham, 6,500 bodies were found in an 18th-century cemetery.
The construction of the HSL connection should be completed in 2033. Once completed, the journey time between London and Birmingham should be reduced from 82 to 49 minutes. Later, the railway is to be extended to Manchester and Leeds in the north of England.
