royalty Auction house RR Auction is currently selling a drawing that Queen Elizabeth is said to have made in the early 1930s. She was between 4 and 6 years old at the time. Her mother calls the drawing in the attached letter “very poor”.
According to the auction house, the pencil-drawn house shows little Elizabeth’s opinion about a new building. It shows how she would like to see Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London. The drawing was sent to playwright JM Barrie along with a letter.
Barrie was a friend of the royal family and is best known as the creator of Peter Pan. Queen Elizabeth’s mother did not hide her feelings about the drawing. In the letter to Barrie, she described her eldest daughter’s drawing as “very poor”. Both the drawing and the handwritten note are on 145 Piccadilly stationery, indicating that they both probably came from the London townhouse where they lived.

“My dear Sir James, I am so sorry that I did not realize that you were going to make your speech this evening. (…) Elizabeth insisted on installing a roof with many small windows for the caretakers,” the Duchess of York wrote to Barrie. “But I expect you just want to say that she made a drawing for you of what the hospital should look like. (…) However, I hope that this poor drawing can be of some use,” he also said. The Queen Mother signed the letter simply “Elizabeth” and once again emphasized that Barrie should keep the correspondence private. “If you can do it, don’t let the press photograph this,” she wrote.
Queen Elizabeth’s sketch and the royal mother’s four-page letter (including envelope) are being sold together as part of RR Auction’s ‘Fine Autograph and Artifacts sale’. The auction runs until January 10.
