In one of the rarest phenomena in the animal world, a giraffe was born without spots, which is believed to be the only one in the world in this way.
The Brights Zoo in the US state of Tennessee hosted the birth of the female giraffe on July 31, and it is characterized by a uniform brown color without the distinctive spots of the well-known appearance of giraffes.
According to the zoo, the giraffe is 182 centimeters tall and lives under the care of its mother and zoo staff.
It is very rare for giraffes to be born with a uniform color without their distinctive mottled appearance.
About “Giraffe Spots”
They function primarily as a form of camouflage in the wild. The skin beneath the spots contains a vascular system that allows giraffes to regulate their temperature. Each giraffe has a unique pattern of spots unlike any other, in a characteristic that resembles a fingerprint. Researchers believe that these patterns are inherited from the mother.
Brights Zoo said it hoped the unusual birth would help highlight the challenges that giraffes face in the world.
It is noteworthy that the “longest animal in the world” is threatened by the erosion of its habitats in Africa, as well as by illegal poaching.
“The international coverage of our bumbling giraffe has highlighted the need to conserve these creatures,” Tony Bright, founder of Brights Zoo, told local news station WCYP.
“They are silently sliding towards extinction, with 40 percent of the population of wild giraffes being lost in the past three decades alone,” he added.
The zoo announced a competition for the public to name the new giraffe, and the short list of proposed names includes “Kebiki” which means “unique” in Swahili, “Firali” which means unnatural, and “Shakiri” which means “the most beautiful”, as well as “beautiful”.
