In monkey pox, the patient has flu symptoms and characteristic rashes, especially on the face but also on other parts of the body. It usually occurs in remote areas of Central and West Africa, near tropical rainforests. The virus is very rare in Europe.

However, Portugal registered twenty possible infections near the capital Lisbon, five of which have already been confirmed. In neighboring Spain, eight suspicious cases are currently under investigation.

The Spanish and Portuguese authorities then activated the national health alert, but emphasized that the disease is not easily transmitted between people and that the risk to the general public is therefore rather small.

Earlier this month, seven infections emerged in the United Kingdom, including four men who identify as “homosexual, bisexual or men who have sex with other men”, according to the UKHSA, the British health service. The UKHSA therefore asks gay or bisexual men to be extra vigilant and to contact the sexual health service in case of unusual skin rashes or lesions.
