Jakarta –
A woman in California was diagnosed with two benign liver tumors. The doctor who examined her suspected that her condition was caused by the contraceptive pill.
The tumor is called a liver adenoma, which is a rare liver tumor often associated with the use of oral contraceptive pills by the National Library of Medicine National Center of Biotechnology Information.
The 30-year-old woman shared the results of her MRI examination on her social media. Through the video she uploaded, the woman named Makenzie Hammond tries to encourage women to think again about their contraceptive choices.
“I don’t want to scare women about birth control, but I do want to inspire women to take control of their own bodies,” Hammond told Newsweek.
Although classified as benign, Hammond’s tumor was very disturbing and changed his life. She now plans to undergo multiple biopsies and potential surgeries while putting plans on hold to have a baby on hold.
She had been taking daily birth control pills for 13 years before switching to a non-hormonal contraceptive method after her diagnosis.
“I had to do it the same day I saw my liver specialist. The tumor is benign now and fortunately, most liver tumors are caused by contraceptives,” explains Hammond.
“But when this type of tumor grows beyond 5 centimeters, there is an increase in rupture and turning malignant. This means that the tumor may turn into cancer in the future. And my largest tumor at the moment is 5.8 cm,” he continued.
The specialist doctors who treated him requested that Hammond undergo another MRI examination in the near future. This is done to see any signs of shrinkage.
“We hope they will, because 78 percent of these types of tumors shrink when you release estrogen,” says Hammond.
Symptoms of Liver Tumors Experienced
Hammond said that currently there are still not many studies that explain how hormonal birth control can cause liver tumors. However, it is quite easy to detect common symptoms when someone has a benign liver tumor, one of which is discomfort in the stomach.
“I had it every time I ate. I would feel too full in my stomach and would physically feel a lump. My stomach would also throb and throb,” he said.
“I had other symptoms the year before that I didn’t know was coming from my heart. Fatigue and feeling like I was going to pass out during training among other random things I didn’t know was related,” he concluded.
