Rare large staircase walks around in a field with kale near Workum

A rare large staircase has been running around in a field with kale near Workum for a few days now.

The bird has been ringed and tagged, which makes it clear that the bird comes from a breeding project in the Brandenburg region from Germany.

By the mid-1990s, the number of great bustards in Germany had fallen to 57, after which a conservation project was set up and breeding areas were fenced off. The eggs from nests outside the protected areas are removed from the nests and incubated in incubators, after which the young, when large enough, are released.

The population has now grown to around 300 individuals in the wild. The bird in the photo was born in 2021 and moved to the Netherlands in the winter.
