An Austrian man infected with gonorrhea after having unsafe sex while on vacation to Cambodia. The type of gonorrhea or gonorrhea that the man suffers from is also quite rare.
The report said the man in his 50s had super gonorrhea, a type of gonorrhea that doesn’t work when treated with antivirals or regular antibiotics. The term “super gonorrhea” refers to insects that have a high level of resistance to recommended treatments.
Insider reported, the man had unprotected sex with a female sex worker in Cambodia in April. Five days later, he experienced pain when urinating and discharge from his penis.
His swab results showed his strain was highly resistant to azithromycin, one of the first antibiotics used to treat gonorrhea, and resistant to other antibiotics, including ceftriaxone, cefixime, cefotaxime, ciprofloxacin, and tetracycline.
It is understood the man was infected with a resistant strain of gonorrhea known as ‘WHO Q’. Previously, this type of gonorrhea was associated with three cases of gonorrhea in 2018 that occurred in Southeast Asia.
So far, the female sex workers in Cambodia who have sex with the man have not been traced.
