Rare Gold Rupiah Coins Issued by Bank Indonesia: Complete List and Value

Most of the rupiah coins circulating in Indonesia have small denominations and are made from aluminum, nickel and brass. Currently, most of the coins in circulation only have a nominal value of IDR 100, IDR 200, IDR 500, and a maximum of IDR 1,000.

But did you know, Bank Indonesia once issued large denomination rupiah coins printed with gold content in them. These coins were usually issued for special editions and most of them are no longer valid.

Even though currently most of them cannot be used for transactions, this rupiah coin has its own value, especially for collectors. Moreover, because this coin contains gold, it certainly adds to the existing selling value.

So, what rupiah coins made from gold have ever been minted? Quoting from the official Bank Indonesia website, Saturday (30/12/2023), here is a list of rupiah coins that contain gold:

1. IDR 100,000 Coin Komodo Image Nature Reserve Series

This coin was issued in 1974. The front of this coin has a picture of the Garuda bird with the text Bank Indonesia, while the back has a picture of a Komodo dragon. This coin is made from 900/1000 grade gold and weighs 33.437 grams.

2. IDR 150,000 UNICEF Series Coin

In order to celebrate the 50th anniversary of UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund), Bank Indonesia issued coins worth IDR 150,000. This coin was issued in 1987 made of 0.999 gold with a weight of 6.22 grams and a diameter of 22 mm.

3. IDR 200,000 Coin Nature Reserve Series Rhinoceros Image

This coin was issued in 1987. The front of this coin depicts the Garuda bird with the text Bank Indonesia, while the reverse depicts the One-horned Javan Rhinoceros. This coin is made from gold grade 917/1000 and weighs 10 grams.

4. Rp. 300,000 coin commemorating the 50th Indonesian independence series

This Rp. 300,000 coin was made to commemorate the 50th independence of the Republic of Indonesia. The front of this coin has a picture of the Garuda bird circled by 50 stars and the text Bank Indonesia, while the back has a picture of President Soeharto talking to the public.

This coin is made from 23 carat gold with a weight of 17 grams, a diameter of 25 mm and a thickness of 1.85 mm.

5. IDR 500,000 coin, Bung Karno 100th Anniversary Series

This coin was issued in 2001 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of President Soekarno. The front of this coin is decorated with an image of the Garuda bird with the text Bank Indonesia and the logo of the Bung Karno 100th anniversary committee. Meanwhile, on the front there is a picture of President Soekarno with the text “100 Years of Bung Karno (1901-2001)”.

This coin is made from 0.999 grade gold, has a diameter of 28.2 mm and weighs 15 grams. The nominal value stated on this coin is IDR 500,000.

6. IDR 850,000 coin series commemorating the 50th Indonesian independence

The IDR 850,000 coin was issued by BI to commemorate the 50th independence of the Republic of Indonesia. The front of this coin has a picture of the Garuda bird circled by 50 stars and the text Bank Indonesia, while the back has a picture of President Soeharto.

This coin was minted in 23 carat gold with a weight of 50 grams, a diameter of 35 mm and a thickness of 2.78 mm.
