Rare German Radar Bunker from WWII Available for Rent on Norwegian Island

SAFE AND QUIET: This is what one of the living rooms in the bunker looks like. It is over 313 square meters, but the thick walls from the Second World War contain much of the space. Photo: Frode Stokkeland

There are only 15 similar bunkers in the world. In Sørlandet, one of them has been put on the rental market.

A rare German radar bunker from the Second World War, located on Flekkerøy, has been put up for rent. The bunker was used by German soldiers to monitor air traffic in Skagerak. For the past six years, the Stokkeland family has used the bunker as a home in addition to their own house. The landlord points out that the home will probably not suit everyone, especially those with claustrophobia or those who prefer windows. But he emphasizes that the rental property will be safe. On Flekkerøy, one and a half miles south of Kristiansand, a very special home has been put up for rent.

In the rental market on the tiny southern island, it is now possible to hijack a very own German radar bunker – with five bedrooms in the home on top of the bunker.

“The only one of its kind”, entices the landlord in the housing advertisement.

– There are only 15 similar bunkers in the world. And this is the only one in Norway, says the landlord of the mildly unique home, Frode Stokkeland, to VG.

Around 80 years ago, German soldiers sat in the bunker and monitored air traffic towards the Skagerak. For the past six years, the Stokkeland family has used the bunker as an integral part of their house.

Now they are moving into an apartment, and both home and bunker can be yours for the tidy sum of NOK 19,500 a month.

– It is quite special. This is a historic building, which has had great use value for us. The children still want us to keep the bunker, so we are renting it out now in the first instance.

– How has the interest been?

– Many people are considering it, and on Saturday someone will come to the viewing. But it is probably in a price range which means that it will take some time before the bunker and the house are rented out.

– It is probably the right market price. There aren’t exactly a lot of such bunkers in the Kristiansand area, replies the landlord with a twinkle in his eye.

The rental property may not be suitable for everyone, Stokkeland points out.

– For people who like windows or have claustrophobia, this is probably not a good fit.

SNÅSA (VG) Tired of people? Then you can consider doing like Erik Sørkilflå. Several islands are for sale in Norway.

But one thing is certain: The new tenant will have a hard time feeling unsafe.

– It is super safe, it must withstand air attacks from 500 kilo bombs and anything worse.

WORKING ON: Here, Frode Stokkeland is doing renovation work on the bunker. Since 2017, the family has used it as a residence, in addition to their own house. Photo: Frode Stokkeland

Stokkeland says that he grew up in the area and himself played a lot in the Germans’ former bunker as a small boy.

– In 1995, our family bought the land under which the bunker is located, and built a home here. In 2012, we finally gained access to the bunker through a newly opened ventilation shaft. Five years later, it was fully renovated.

– Was there a lot of work renovating the bunker?

– Sure. It has cost both kroner and öre, and not least time. But it has been worth it. As I said, it has given us a lot of enjoyment.
