Rare Ferrari Collection from Hurricane Charley Found After Decades

Near the Indianapolis Motor Speedway there is a warehouse that any car lover would like to visit, especially if you are passionate about Ferraris, since we are talking about a place where a series of very striking Prancing Horses sleep that have been hidden for decades. Some of them are truly special, like the 1956 250 GT, once owned by King Mohamed V of Morocco, and a 275 GTB that took part in the 1966 Targa Florio.

The dream of many collectors

While the location of this collection may seem strange, the way in which all these cars arrived is even more unusual. Hurricane Charley devastated many areas of Florida in 2004, causing widespread flooding and damage. On his way he was a barn containing approximately twenty exotic Italian sports cars from Maranello. The collection includes models dating from 1954 to 1991, including the aforementioned 250 GT and 275 GTB, as well as a Mondial 500 Spider that entered the 1954 Mille Miglia and a 1978 512 BB Competizione developed by Luigi Chinetti Sr. for the 24 Hours of Le Mans that year.

As the 2004 hurricane season was most destructive, including four major storms that caused €60 billion worth of damage throughout the Caribbean and the Gulf Coast of the United States, the collection was moved to a storage Indiana, a place where it has remained intact for almost two decades. Yes indeed, some of them still have injuries from Hurricane Charley as the barn they were in partially collapsed. Hence some of the dents and scratches exhibited.

All of them are in original condition, unrestored, with their factory paint.. While many people knew about the cars from their racing histories, few knew that they still existed, and only a select few knew about the collection. It’s the holy grail of barn finds for Ferrari collectors and aficionados. And now this whole group of true motoring legends is up for sale as part of the auction that will be held RM Sotheby’s in Monterey, California, from August 17 to 19. We will have to stay tuned to see the final price…

Specialist in motor and technology issues. Passionate about mechanics and four wheels since I was a child, now I try to pass on my experiences to anyone who enjoys the smell of gasoline, the speed, the pleasure of driving, the design and the sound of those engines that give us goosebumps. tip
