A Dutch 1 cent coin was sold this week in Veldhoven for a record amount of 110,000 euros, writes of Gelderlander. Never before in our country has so much money been paid for 1 cent.
The coin is from 1818 and is very rare. The coin was made in Utrecht as a test copy, but was never mass produced. As a result, there are few coins available.
Auction house Karel de Geus Muntveilingen started the bidding at an initial value of 25,000 euros. The highest bid came from a bidder from the Netherlands. De Geus is happy that the coin remains in our country.
The last time such a coin was auctioned was six weeks ago. That is exceptional, because before that, not a single cent from 1818 was auctioned for ten years. According to De Geus, the Dutch buyer probably missed the boat at the auction six weeks ago.
