Rare Draft of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ among Queen Manuscripts Up for Auction

After New York and until June 8, the manuscripts will stop in Los Angeles and Hong Kong. And then they will be exhibited in August in London, before being sold in a series of auctions scheduled from August 4 to September 11.

Written in ballpoint pen and pencil on the letterhead of a now defunct airline “British Midlands Airways”, the draft of “Bohemian Rhapsody” reveals in 15 pages the different twists that Freddie Mercury considered for this famous Queen success, and that he anticipated headline “Mongolian Rhapsody”.

Sotheby’s estimates its value at between $1 million and $1.5 million.

Among the other drafts of the singer – who died of AIDS in 1991 – are those of the songs “Don’t Stop Me Now”, “Somebody to Love” and “We Are the Champions”.

Such early drafts were “easily lost or discarded,” but the pieces up for auction offer a “fascinating dive into the way “Freddie Mercury” songs were developed and composed,” “while reminding us of their complexity.” musicality and sophistication,” said Gabriel Heaton, a manuscript specialist at Sotheby’s.

These pages reveal the artist’s intense work, his “incredible attention” to creating Queen’s signature vocal harmonies, it added.

Among the other pieces is a red notebook from the early 1970s, certainly one of his earliest lyric compendiums, on whose pages there are also coffee-stained sketches of the logo for the group.

Also other pieces such as a 24-page yellow spiral notebook with lyrics for the group’s seventh album in 1978, called “Jazz”, which includes the song “Don’t Stop Me Now” and also some costumes including the satin jumpsuit that He wore Mercury in the video for “Bohemian Rhapsody” in 1975.

The full catalog of some 1,500 objects will be revealed in late July or early August, and Sotheby’s estimates it will fetch a value of $7.2 million.
