Rare diseases: – Sonia (20) does not have a chin

Sonia Gupta (20) from Kolkata in India has lived her entire life without a chin.

The 20-year-old says that she has been on the outside of society for years, because she has been bullied for her appearance.

This is written by the news agency Jam Press.

Weighs 25 kilos

Not only is she missing a chin, she is also very small for her age. At 25 kilos, she is barely bigger than a seven-year-old.

In recent years, however, she has received more positive attention. After she started sharing her story on social media, her follower count skyrocketed.

Now she has 28,000 followers on Instagram.

– Can’t afford surgery

She posts regular videos of herself singing and dancing to inspire others.

– When my family took me to the doctor, they suggested facial surgery. But my family can’t afford it, so I haven’t had the operation, she says, according to the news agency.

It is not known what kind of diagnosis Sonia has.

Problems with eating

When children are born with small or missing chins, they may be diagnosed with micrognathia or otofacial syndrome. Both diagnoses are characterized by missing parts of the jaw.

Otofacial syndrome is an extremely rare congenital malformation, where the baby is born completely without a jaw bone – and thus also without a chin. It causes problems with breathing and eating properly, and can lead to death.

However, there are people who live with otofacial syndrome. Last year the Indian newspaper wrote Indian Express about the American Joseph Williams, who lives with the syndrome.

Associated with syndromes

The man can neither speak nor eat. He uses sign language to communicate and eats with the help of a tube.

Micrognathia, on the other hand, is a condition with an abnormally small lower jaw, which in turn leads to a large overbite. It writes Major medical encyclopedias. The condition is also known as mandibular hypoplasia.

– The condition is associated with a wide range of developmental disorders and syndromes, but can also occur without a connection to a syndrome, writes the encyclopedia.

Treatment can be braces, growth-stimulating measures or surgery, they further state.

– In some cases, micrognathia can lead to breathing difficulties because the tongue lies too far back against the pharyngeal wall, which accelerates the need for treatment.
