NEW DELHI – More than 80 children, aged under five years, have been infected with a rare flu currently referred to as “tomato flu”, in the states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu in India south, according to Indian media reports.
“Tomato flu”, according to media reports, has symptoms including rashes and blisters on the infected body, high fever, body aches, joint swelling, and fatigue.
In Kerala, flu detected in Kollam District, has now spread to Neduvathur, Anchal and Aryankavu Districts.
The Kollam district in Kerala borders the state of Tamil Nadu, where the flu is believed to have been first registered.
Now health workers and police have set up checkpoints and are checking each individual for fever and other symptoms to prevent the spread of the disease. Not yet certain whether this flu only affects children.

In Tamil Nadu, a team of 24 health workers has been formed to check for flu symptoms in children.
Meanwhile, Kerala’s other neighboring state, Karnataka, has instructed authorities to keep an eye on daily travelers from the state entering the border district.
