Rare Dinosaur Skeletons, including Nessie, to be Auctioned at Sotheby’s New York

Two reconstructed skeletons of dinosaurone of them of a species associated with the legendary Loch Ness monster, will go on sale on July 26 at Sotheby’s auction house in New York, he announced Tuesday.

Named Nessie after the famous Scottish loch beast, this rare species of plesiosaur, a marine reptile, has an estimated value of between $600,000 and $800,000, a considerable increase from the 456,000 euros paid in 2010 in Paris, in another auction organized by Sotheby’s.

Back then, it came from the old collection of a German private museum, according to the auction house catalogue.

Discovered in Blockley, in Gloucestershire, UK, in 1990, “around 75%” of the skeleton is preserved, which is considered “exceptional”, according to Cassandra Hotton, head of Sotheby’s science and popular culture department.

With its long neck, the plesiosaur has been associated in contemporary culture with the Loch Ness monster, the legendary creature of Scottish folklore, despite the fact that the theory has been disproved by scientists.

Sotheby’s will put it up for sale on July 26 in New York, along with another skeleton, a ptenarodon, a flying reptile with a 6-meter wingspan, estimated at between 4 and 6 million dollars.

Dinosaurs are regular auction stars. The sales record is held by a Tyrannosaurus rex, which sold in 2020 for $31.8 million.
