Piyah Martell (27) was born with a very rare condition called sacral agenesis.

The condition affects the lower vertebrae – meaning Martell’s spine and legs were not fully developed until she was born.

Walks on hands

In an interview with Born Differentshe says that she has to go on her hands.

– I always wear gloves or slippers, or something to protect my hands, she says.

She also often uses a skateboard to get around her home in Sacramento, California.

In the interview, she says that only one in a million people are born with sacral agenesis, and that the condition affects most of what she does.

– The condition is rare, she says.

Bought women’s clothes

The 27-year-old was born as a boy, and was named Pedro Martell.

She now identifies as a woman, and has therefore changed her name.

It was when Piyah Martell was 15 years old that she told her father that she wanted to start dressing like a girl.

She bought women’s clothes and make-up, and told her father that she would now be called Piyah.

– Not satisfied

Piyah lost her mother when she was seven, and therefore only grew up with her father.

– He was not too happy about my decision. It took him several years before he started saying my new name, she says, and continues:

– He did not want his son to become a woman. It was hard for him, but he eventually found out that it wasn’t just a phase I was having.

A lot of bullying

Piyah Martell says growing up trans with functional challenges was tough.

– There was a lot of bullying in high school. People backbited me. They were rude, called me nicknames, said: “You don’t have legs, you’re an amputee”.

– She is fantastic

Despite a tough upbringing, Piyah Martell says she now lives a happy life.

Martell spends a lot of time creating awareness about functional challenges in the LGBTQ+ community, and she also takes on modeling assignments.

She is fond of vlogging, and constantly posts videos from her life YouTubewhere she has close to 10,000 followers.

She often posts videos where she sings:

Ten years ago, she found happiness with her boyfriend Andrew.

Despite Martell’s lack of a lower body, this does not get in the way of his sex life.

– It’s not a problem. Piyah and me have a wonderful sex life. Life is beautiful, says Andrew.

Piyah Martell says that she has overcome many challenges, and that she now has a big wish:

A gender-affirming operation.

– I also want to travel around the world. I want the whole world to see me. I want people to know that it is perfectly okay to be yourself, she says.
