Rare Civil War Gold Coins Unearthed in Kentucky Cornfield for Sale

The treasure had probably been buried for over 150 years. More than 700 gold coins dating from the American Civil War and found buried in a cornfield in Kentucky, in the southeastern United States, have been put up for sale and could be sold for several million dollars.

The prized treasure was unearthed at a farm in Kentucky earlier this year, according to the organization that appraised the coins and the company that listed them for sale. Its exact location and the identity of the man who discovered it have not been revealed at this time.

In a video posted on the coin sales site, however, we can see a man filming himself digging the earth, in which coins appear. “It’s the craziest thing ever,” he exclaims.

A consequence of the Civil War

According to the site for sale GovMint.com, the coins date from between 1840 and 1863 and the loot includes 1 dollar gold coins called “Indian”, as well as American gold coins of 10 and 20 dollars. Among these, 18 American gold coins of 20 dollars, extremely rare, and minted in 1863 in Philadelphia have even been found. According to collectors, these could sell for sums reaching six figures.

“The importance of this discovery cannot be overemphasized,” rare coin dealer Jeff Garrett said in a statement, saying the treasure represented a “time capsule.”

During the Civil War (1861-1865) which pitted the slave states of the South against the abolitionist states of the North, Kentucky had adopted a neutral posture, but had been involved in this deadly conflict all the same. “The Kentucky Gold Cache may be one consequence of this conflict, with coins lost for more than 150 years,” said the NGC, which sworn the coins.
