Rare Bullet Used to Kill John Lennon Up for Auction: A Piece of Beatles Memorabilia

A bullet from the gun used to kill British singer John Lennon will go under the hammer on Thursday, reports the BBC. The auction house finds it difficult to estimate what the bullet is worth, but calls it “a very interesting piece of Beatles memorabilia”.

The New York Police Department once donated the bullet to former police officer Brian Taylor. He took a group of young people who wanted to become police officers to the police station in New York. While Taylor was riding in a police car, he became involved in a shooting.

As an apology, officers from the New York Police Department took Taylor to a museum that houses weapons used in infamous cases.

Taylor was allowed to test the gun that killed John Lennon. Afterwards he was given the bullet and cartridge to take home. The police officer framed it, along with a photo of himself with the gun.

Relatives of the now deceased Taylor are now auctioning the bullet through the British auction house Anderson & Garland. It is still unclear what the piece will yield.

“But very rarely do you get something so unusual and unique, which is why it is difficult to know what it is worth and whether there is a market for it or not,” the auction house said. In any case, according to the auctioneers, it is “a very interesting piece of Beatles memorabilia that is unlikely to be replicated”.

Lennon’s killer, now 68-year-old Mark David Chapman, is serving a life sentence.
