Two eagle owl chicks were born in the Leenderbos between Valkenswaard and Leende. It is the first time that an eagle owl couple has bred in the Leenderbos. Forester Erik Schram speaks of a unique.
A student forest ranger from Staatsbosbeheer discovered the eagle owl nest a few days ago while making an inventory of plant species in the forest. Forest ranger Erik Schram waited a while before bringing out the good news. “Breeding birds are very vulnerable in the breeding season,” he says. “It is therefore important that the animals get enough rest. We ask people to stay on the trails and to keep dogs on a leash.”
Largest in the world
The eagle owl had disappeared in many places for a while. But in recent years, the number in the Netherlands has increased again. With a wingspan of up to 188 centimeters, the eagle owl is one of the largest owls in the world.
The bird lover will be well catered for, because a crane chick was born for the first time in the Brabantse Peel on Monday. A few kilometers away, the rusks with mice can now also be taken out of the cupboard.
