DISTRICT AT DUURSTEDE
Saturday, October 31 was Halloween. Halloween traditionally involves scary costumes and terrifying make-up creations: everything is pulled out of the closet to make it as creepy as possible. This year Halloween is even extra spooky because the rare blue moon is in the sky. This phenomenon is uncommon and certainly not during Halloween. It is not often that two full moons appear in one month.
In general, this phenomenon occurs once every 2.5 to 3 years. How did that happen? Our calendar and the phases of the moon are not exactly the same: a full moon occurs a little more often than once a month. As a result, a “surplus” is created, as it were, so that every now and then a second full month takes place in one month.
Whether or not a blue moon appears in a particular month depends on the time zone you are in. For example, if a blue moon falls in one part of the world on March 31, it could be April 1 in another part of the world at that time. So there will be no Blue Moon in that part of the world. This made this blue moon extra special, because for the first time since World War II, the blue moon was visible all over the world on October 31.
