Enthusiasts and investors are ready to welcome on carandclassic.itthe largest European online platform dedicated to the purchase and sale of classic cars, a fantastic and very rare Alfa Romeo that made history.
The auction will begin on Sunday 17 September and end on Sunday 24.
Rare and precious jewel on four wheels
It’s about a precious piece of automotive history, a spectacular Alfa Romeo 1900 C Sprint Ghia Supergioiello, which has exceptional collectible value. We can consider it one of the most refined creations of Made in Italy of all time.
It shows the design of its small series called Supergioiello, an exclusive style line with which the atelier itself has decided to embellish various cars, starting from 1949. Only 6 bodies are mounted, compared to the 18-20 units expected, and today if they know only 4 in existence.
The one that will soon be auctioned by Car & Classic is the most special thanks to the unique original “Metallic Copper” colour, which underlines the elegance of the model. This is by the way the last unit produced, chassis number 01549, in 1953.
Show Alfa Romeo skills: it is one of the most incredible cars of the Alfa Romeo built from the post-war period to today and absolutely one of the most seductive interpretations of the Alfa Romeo 1900 C Sprint. A true work of art.
The Alfa Romeo 1900
It is the first Alfa Romeo with a load-bearing body, produced from 1950 to 1959. The engine, no longer with 6 and 8 cylinders but with a 4-cylinder split, made it a winner in the race as well as a great success on the market. It was in fact called “the family car that wins races”.
The C Sprint version was produced with Coupé and Cabriolet bodywork as early as 1951, for the most important ateliers of the 1950s, including Ghia, active from 1916 to 1973. Cars aimed at the sportier and more demanding clientele of the Alfa Romeo brand, which wanted to have in its hands custom-built cars with a high level of craftsmanship and finished according to one’s preferences.
The Alfa Romeo 1900 C Sprint Ghia Supergioiello up for auction
This model has been for most of its life in the Iberian peninsula. Its first owner, speed enthusiast Gumersindo Garcia Fernandez, registered it in the Real Automóvil Club de España. It was 1954.
The following year, the owner registered with the “Supergioiello” at the premiere great international competition of 1955, the grueling Monte Carlo Rally, which he managed to complete, finishing 204th. He continued to race the car for the remainder of the season in southern Europe.
The car then passed to its second owner, the president of the Club 600 Barcelona Salvador Ros and in 1958 it returned to racing finishing tenth in the Rally de los Pirineos and later participating regularly in many other races until 1961, when an accident stopped it.
The destroyed front end was replaced with that of a 1900 C Sprint Touring (that of the Ghia bodywork was obviously unobtainable). But Dino Cognolato, master restorer, managed to restore, many years later, the original appearance of the Supergioiellorestoring the car exactly to the appearance it had in January 1955 at the Monte Carlo Rally.
Pablo Gemino was its third owner, responsible for the magazine of the Antic Car Club de Catalunya and historian by passion. After the restoration, the very rare Alfa Romeo changed hands two more times and today it is presented in excellent condition. In 2021 he paraded in the Concorso d’Eleganza of Villa d’Este on Lake Como.
That’s it
