Rare Albino Cougar Born in Nicaragua’s Thomas Belt Zoo

In Juigalpa, Nicaragua, a snow-white puma was born in a zoo. As far as is known, it is only one of four albino cougars that exist worldwide.

In the Thomas Belt Zoo it was a party four weeks ago when not a dark but white cougar was born. According to veterinarian Carlos Molina, who works at the zoo, only three similar cases have been recorded.

Although the cub is healthy and eating well, he warns that the animal is still very young. Because albino cougars are very vulnerable to sunlight, caretakers of the park therefore pay extra attention. They don’t know the gender yet.

Nicaragua is located in Central America. Cougars are found throughout much of the Americas, from the high Andes region of southern Peru to the jungles of Central America. In the eastern half of North America, they have all but disappeared.

The mother also gave birth to three cubs. The other two are yellow-brown in color with spots. The public is allowed to see them when they are about three months old.
