Chromebook laptops aren’t really popular, compared to Windows or MacOS machines, at least it seems. According to a recent IDC report, Chromebook laptops topped Mac computer sales for the first time in 2020. This, according to the report, was due to commercial demand for lightweight, powerful and affordable personal computers. The IDC report says that while Windows continues to dominate the market, Chrome OS has overtaken MacOS to take second place in terms of the most popular operating system.
According to figures shared by IDC, Windows market share fell 4.9% year-over-year (year-over-year) in 2020, while Mac OS fell from 6.7% to 7, 5%. The report says demand for Chrome OS topped MacOS in Q2 2020 and continued to grow in Q3 and Q4 to maintain second place. Mac computers started with a 5.8% market share in the first quarter of 2020 and grew to 8.4% in the third quarter of 2020, before falling to 7.7% in the last quarter. Windows, on the other hand, fell to 76.7% in the fourth quarter of 2020. Meanwhile, Chrome OS grew 4.4% to capture 10.8% of the market by the end of 2020. Windows systems have captured a total of 80.5% of the market in 2020, while MacOS came in third with a 7.5% market share, as mentioned above.
Microsoft and Apple have, in a way, identified the threat that Chrome OS has posed over the past two years. Apple said in September that its new iPad Air was capable of performing tasks six times faster than the best-selling Chromebook laptop. Microsoft, on the other hand, is doing a lot of work on Windows 10X, which is seen as a direct competitor to Chrome OS.
