Rapper and singer S10 received the Pop Stipend this year. S10, stage name of 21-year-old Stien den Hollander, was told during the digital edition of the Groningen festival Eurosonic Noorderslag that she had been unanimously chosen by the jury.
The stipend of 10,000 euros was created in 2018 by the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds, to support promising pop artists and bands.
Edison
S10 signed a contract with hip-hop label Noah’s Ark at the age of 17 and released the albums there Snowsniper (2019) in Butterfly (2020) out. Through her lyrics, she talks candidly about her psychological problems.
In front of Snowsniper at the end of last year, she won an Edison, the oldest music prize in the Netherlands, in the alternative category.
“The growth process that S10 has gone through in a short period of time is impressive,” writes the jury of the Pop Stipendium. The jury says it hopes that S10 can use the money to work on its reputation outside the Netherlands.
No Popprijs
Last year singer-songwriter Judy Blank was awarded the Pop Stipend. For this, the support went to Thomas Azier (2019) and Jacco Gardner (2018).
Normally, Eurosonic Noorderslag also awards the Popprijs, to an artist who has made a major contribution to Dutch pop music. However, that presentation will not take place this year. The organizers find the election inappropriate, because the music industry has been hit so hard by the corona crisis this year.
