Rapist arrested after 46 years thanks to DNA match daughter he fathered with victim Abroad

A night of babysitting in 1975 turned into a nightmare for a 13-year-old girl. The perpetrator, Carvel Bennett, had asked her to babysit his children. Later that night, she was raped at his home, which resulted in her becoming pregnant.

The baby, Daisy, was put up for adoption shortly after birth. Growing up in a foster home, she discovered the story of her biological mother at the age of 18; under what circumstances she was born.

She contacted her birth mother and decided to continue the case, which was investigated by the police in 1975 but never went to trial. The DNA test showed that Bennett is her biological father.

Her mother initially did not want to reopen the lawsuit, because she did not want to relive the trauma. Agents had already approached her in 2014 if she wanted to file a complaint. But a few years later, in 2019, she changed her mind and Bennett was arrested.

Lonely

Bennett, who initially denied being the father, eventually admitted to having had sex with the victim. But he claimed she agreed. She would also have told him that she was 16 years old. The judge did not believe this and called it ‘victim-blaming’.

In a statement, the victim said how lonely she felt. “People said they thought I was disgusting because I was pregnant so young,” said the victim.

Daisy is also left with scars from the horrific deeds. In her statement, she described how Bennett destroyed the relationship with her mother. “Because you chose to rape a child, we pay the fine.”

The judge acknowledged how much damage Bennett caused to both the mother and daughter. The perpetrator is going to prison for 11 years.

Daisy and her mother are in contact, but everything that has happened makes it difficult.
